Question:
Out of the Schengen Member States not all have a consulate or representation in Chisinau. Now that there is a Common Application Centre can I apply for a visa there if I want to travel to Germany or other Schengen Member States? Or can I apply for an Austrian visa and then go to one of these countries?

Answer:
The visa has to be applied for at the consulate of the country of your main destination. If your main destination is in Austria, you can apply at the CAC for a Schengen visa to be issued by Austria. This visa entitles you to also enter other Schengen Member States but mostly you have to spend your time in Austria.
For example: you have a 5-day training in Austria and you get a visa for that purpose. After the training is finished and if your visa is still valid you can make a short trip – within the validity of your visa – to Germany or other Schengen member States. However, if you want first of all to visit Germany, you have to ask for a Schengen visa from the respective embassy. Top

Question:
I heard that a visa free transit is possible in the EU with a valid visa of any EU country.

Answer:
If you have a valid Schengen visa, for example to Portugal, you can freely travel to your destination through other Schengen Member States. At the same time, there exist the so-called transit decisions. The substance of these decisions is the following:
Citizens of third countries, like Moldovan citizens for example, travelling to Member States of the European Union or Norway or Iceland, with the exception of Romania, Bulgaria, the United Kingdom and Ireland and having a valid visa or residence permit to one of these countries or having a residence permit to Liechtenstein can transit through the territory of the Schengen states without a transit visa. In this case the transit can not last longer than
5 days and the validity of the above mentioned visa or residence permit has to cover the whole transit period through the Schengen area.

Question:
I have heard that travellers may be returned from the border even if they have a valid visa. What is the reason for this?

Answer:
A visa is only a preliminary permission for entry, which does not authorise its bearer to automatically enter the country. The traveller may be requested to provide proof of the existence of the conditions of his entry and stay into the country and, if he is not able to fulfil this, he may be returned from the border. For example you can present a travel medical insurance when you apply for the visa but you do not have it when entering the country.

Question:
If I need to travel to the United States of America by plane and I will be making two transfers at the airports of Vienna and Frankfurt, will I need a transit visa?

Answer:
In case you travel to a country that is not a Schengen Member and you need to make transfers in more airports of the Schengen area you need a transit visa for the first Schengen country you will be travelling through.
Therefore, if you are travelling to the USA and you are making transfers at the airports of Vienna and Frankfurt, you will need a transit visa for Austria, which in this case is the first Schengen country of transit. But in case you will be transiting only one of the mentioned airports you will not need a transit visa.
